Auditions
How to audition for The Sound of Music
No experience is required, and if you would rather work behind the scenes, come anyway.
Prepare a song from The Sound of Music with background tracks. Actors auditioning for the von Trapp children should be prepared to sing “Do-Re-Mi” with background tracks. Be ready for cold reads from the script.
You may also prepare a second song from any musical (a 16–32 bar cut with your own background tracks) and/or a short monologue of about one minute. Callbacks consist of cold readings and singing from the show.
A completed audition and release form, and a current photo taken within the past year. It does not need to be professionally taken. Forms are attached to the sign-up.
Check the rehearsal and performance calendar for conflicts before committing, and read the Code of Conduct. Both are on the sign-up under Show (related files).
Video auditions are accepted until noon on Friday, August 28. Text or email Marilyn Steiner at 740-243-5005 or mamawokka@hotmail.com for details on submitting virtually.
The stage version can be watched on Tubi and varies somewhat from the 1965 film. These performances will not include “Something Good,” but will include “How Can Love Survive,” “No Way to Stop It” and “An Ordinary Couple.”
Auditions vary by director, but ours are usually cold reads from the script. A director may want to hear you do accents. Dress comfortably. An audition is also your chance to ask about rehearsals, costumes and the production itself.

Since 2012
Good stories, well told, three floors up
Garret Players began in 2012 and brings together people who share an interest in encouraging the educational, cultural and entertainment values of live community theatre.
Our principal format is to present classic and new plays adapted as imaginative and high quality staged readings presented in the round. Many other theatrical formats are possible on the third floor of the library main branch. Whatever the format, audiences experience good stories well told by some of the best actors, designers and directors in Lancaster, Fairfield County and beyond.
Our intimate, minimalist staged-reading format invites audience members to engage their imaginations, or to just plain have fun. We also encourage audience participation by having talk-back sessions after some performances.
Actors find that the staged-reading process, without memorizing lines, means their time commitment to a quality play is usually no more than two weeks from the first rehearsal to the last performance. Garret Players is inclusive, providing opportunities to all.
No admission charge
Never a ticket price. Donations at the door support the Friends of the Library, a 501(c)(3) organization. Everything we do is donated, including the time and talents of the actors and crews.
A two-week commitment
Because actors read from the script rather than memorize, most productions run about two weeks from first rehearsal to final curtain.
Wheelchair accessible
The third floor of the library is wheelchair accessible, and the library opens 30 minutes before every curtain. Seating is limited to 100 per performance.

Send us your email or mailing address and we will keep you up to date on auditions and performances.

- Set pieces, props, costumes, lights and sound
- Vocal, dialect and accent coaching
